In order to promote public awareness and research in water, sanitation and hygiene sector, an MOU was signed between the LG & RDD Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and UET Peshawar and Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan here in a function organized in the LG Secretariat Peshawar. On behalf of UET Peshawar, Dr. Rashid Rehan, Director National Institute Urban Infra Structure Planning and on behalf of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan , Mr. Sher Alam Registrar signed the MOU.
Senior Minister Mr. Innayat Ullah Khan graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Addressing the audience of the event the Chief Guest appreciated the efforts of WatSan Cell in local government department for close coordination with the prestigious educational institutions to conclude and materialize the MOU. He also emphasized the need for more research to find out feasible and affordable solutions to the water and sanitation sector in Pakistan in general and in KP in particular. He assured his full cooperation and support to see the MOU deliver and contribute to the cause of the WASH sector. He also shared the government of KP vision and mission to see the cities and rural areas clean and green.
In his welcome remarks, the Secretary Local Council Board , Khizar Hayat Khan apprised the audience of the event about the aims and objectives of the MOU that it will be effective for three years and which will be extended on mutual consent of the parties. Under this MOU the parties will jointly conduct Research, seminars , training , projects and other activities related to water, sanitation and hygiene sector. He further added that under the MOU the coordination between Academia and Local Government will be made more strengthened and the talent and expertise of the students as well as faculty will be utilized for the working in the WASH sector.
The Secretary LG & RDD highlighted the policies of the Local Government department in WASH sector and huge funds allocated to the elected local councils for working on the water and sanitation. Our department is also working on creating public awareness amongst the rural and urban communities on hygiene promotion. He acknowledged that Universities are the hub of research and knowledge and they need to be associated to tape their wisdom and resources to benefit the sector.
The Vice Chancellor of UET Peshawar and Registrar of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan also addressed the ceremony and highlighted the potential role of the universities to work for the cause of the sector and to play a role for the welfare of the people and institutions of this province. They assured their cooperation and expressed their willingness and enthusiasm to tackle the challenges in WASH sector which needs proper attention.
Unicef WASH Specialist Mr. Sajjad Akbar also spoke on the occasion and informed that this is a great opportunity both for the government and the academia to join hands and explore ventures for joint cooperation in the sector. He also emphasized the need for approval of the pending sanitation policy which will determine more clear direction for the sanitation sector in the province.
The event was also attended by senior officers of local government department, public health engineering department, CEO of WSSP, representatives of national and international NGO’s and print and electronic media.
